Splishi Splashi controls explained: steering analogue, speed orbs and the danger of going fast

Splishi Splashi steers like a pointer, not a d-pad, and its speed system is a trap as much as a reward. How the analogue control model works and how to use speed without dying to it.

Most survival arcade games give you a direction. Splishi Splashi gives you a pointer, and the difference changes how every dodge in the game works. If your fish keeps overshooting gaps it should have threaded, the control model is almost certainly why.

Analogue, not directional

Hold the left mouse button (or a finger on touch) and move up or down. The fish follows your pointer.

That last sentence is doing a lot of work. The fish tracks where you point with proportional steering: a small movement is a gentle curve, a large movement is a hard bank. There is a continuous range between those, and all of it is available to you at any moment.

The practical consequence is that input size and direction are separate decisions. An overshooting dodge used too much input. A dodge that clipped a predator was too small. Accounting for input magnitude makes near-misses predictable.

This is also why the game’s escapes feel earned. You are the one deciding exactly how tight to cut a corner. A four-direction scheme would make that decision for you; this one hands it over, along with the consequences.

Threats come from everywhere

The other half of the control problem is spatial. Most chase games put the danger behind you, which means your attention has a natural home, look ahead, occasionally check the rear.

Splishi Splashi closes in from the top, the bottom, and both sides. That makes it a game about spatial awareness under pressure. Every dodge has to account for the whole tank, and a perfect dodge that puts you into the path of something you were not watching is not a dodge.

The habit is to stop tracking the predator on your tail and start tracking open water. Ask where the safe space is, those are different questions, and only the first one tells you where to point.

Speed is a reward and a tax

Orange and blue orbs raise your top speed. Chaining them is powerful and it feels excellent.

It is also the mechanism by which most good runs end. Higher speed means you cover more distance per unit of reaction time, which means you have less time to read the next threat and less margin to correct an input that was slightly too large. The control model amplifies this: proportional steering at high speed turns a modest pointer movement into a very large bank.

So speed is not a straightforward upgrade. It is a trade, more reward potential for less reaction margin, and the skill is choosing when to take that trade.

The workable rule: build speed in open water, shed it before entering traffic. Use a fast stretch to reach a bonus that is off the ideal track, then let the speed come down before you re-enter a crowded area. Full speed through a busy screen is how runs end, and it ends them quickly.

Jumps and perfect dives also grant a speed boost, which means the same caution applies to them, a well-executed dive that launches you into a crowd at high speed is a mistake with good technique in it.

Blowfish and islands

Two specific hazards worth naming because they interact with speed directly.

Blowfish slow you down. Losing speed in a crowded area can help, but a sudden uncontrolled speed change also shifts the result of proportional steering. Treat blowfish as steering disruptions as well as pace changes.

Islands are solid. Hitting one at max speed is the clearest case of the speed tax: you had less time to see it and less margin to bank away. In open water islands are trivial to avoid. At full speed in traffic they are one of the more common run-enders.

The achievements are a syllabus

There are twenty achievements, and many of them reward playing in ways you would not choose by default, surviving a particular way, reaching a threshold, taking a specific risk.

That makes them more useful than a completion checklist. Hunting them pushes you into the parts of the control model you have been avoiding: the very tight banks, the deliberate low-speed runs, the aggressive orb chains. Each one teaches an edge of the steering system, and the skills carry back into ordinary high-score runs.

It also breaks a single long high-score chase into a set of shorter, more achievable goals, which suits a game where a run can last seconds or minutes.

Practice drills

Three specific things to try, each for a run or two:

  1. Small inputs only. Deliberately steer with the smallest movements that clear each threat. You will die to something eventually, but you will find the bottom of the proportional range, which is where the tightest dodges live.
  2. Refuse every orb. Play one run at base speed. The tank is much more readable, and you will have more time to read threat patterns.
  3. Watch the open water ahead. Spend a run tracking the safe route in front of the fish. It feels dangerous and it is usually safer.
