Upflux beginner's guide: surviving your first runs

Upflux gets hard fast, for reasons the first few attempts do not make obvious. What to do in your opening runs, which instincts to unlearn, and the habits worth building early.

Upflux teaches its two-step input quickly, then asks you to manage several moving belts at once. Early runs improve when you start reading the whole conveyor stack before choosing which orb to lift.

What the game is asking you to do

Several conveyor belts are stacked vertically on one screen, with the reactor portal above them. Tap or click an orb, then tap or click above the conveyor one level higher to drop it there. Repeat that lift until the orb reaches the portal.

The full layout remains visible, so every move can account for belt direction, the distance to an edge, and other orbs approaching their own lift points. Different layouts change the reaction space while preserving the same interaction.

The thing that is actually killing you

Reactor energy drains continuously. Delivering an orb restores energy, while missing one removes a large additional chunk. A few losses close together can end a run even when the conveyor stack looked manageable moments earlier.

Watch the full screen before committing to a rescue. Saving one falling orb is valuable, but following it can leave several other orbs without a safe lift. The strongest decision protects the greatest amount of reactor energy across the whole sequence.

Choose rescues in context

Aim to catch every orb when the next lift is clear. Each miss carries a heavy energy penalty, so casually letting orbs fall will shorten the run.

There is one important exception. If many orbs are lined up for quick deliveries, chasing a difficult orb may break the streak and cause several more losses. Accepting one energy hit can preserve a stronger sequence and leave the reactor healthier overall.

Prepare repeatable lift points

Learn where each belt gives you enough room to lift an orb safely. Reusing reliable landing areas reduces last-second decisions and makes the next move easier to read.

The landing point matters as much as the timing. Drop too close to an edge and the next lift becomes urgent; drop with useful belt ahead and you gain time to scan the rest of the stack.

Power-ups: hold one

Upflux gives you six tools: slow time, freeze the belts, reverse the flow, restore energy, clear the board, and briefly stopping new spawns.

The beginner mistake is spending them immediately, for small convenience. The habit worth building from your very first runs is to keep one in reserve. Difficulty in Upflux arrives in surges, moments where extra orbs spawn and the belts speed up and the screen goes from busy to overwhelming in a second or two. A frozen belt during a calm stretch is worth very little. A frozen belt during a surge is worth the rest of the run.

Use restore energy when the reactor is genuinely close to empty; at that point it directly extends the run.

Scan before every rescue

A clear rescue protects both reactor energy and the streak. Check the other belts first; chasing one orb can expose several prepared deliveries. The best rescue leaves the wider sequence safe.

A first-runs checklist

For your opening attempts, focus on these habits:

  1. Read the next belt first. Check its direction and available space before selecting an orb.
  2. Place with room to react. Avoid creating an immediate edge rescue on the next level.
  3. Track reactor energy after a miss. The large penalty shows why repeated losses are dangerous.
  4. Protect lined-up deliveries. Accept one difficult loss when chasing it would sacrifice several prepared orbs.
  5. Keep a power-up ready. Use it when the stack becomes crowded or a surge changes the pace.

Why it gets hard, and why that is fair

More orbs appear, belts get faster, and reactor surges push the pace. The same select-and-drop interaction applies across every conveyor layout.

That is the design working as intended. The escalation is testing whether you can keep executing simple, correct decisions while under pressure, which is why the fundamentals above never stop being the right advice. They just get harder to follow.
