Upflux scoring explained: streaks, energy and why a dropped orb costs more than you think

How Upflux combines streak bonuses, reactor energy, missed-orb penalties, and careful lifts into one score-attack loop.

Upflux combines streak scoring with a reactor-energy clock. Strong runs come from lining up quick deliveries while limiting the heavy energy penalty from missed orbs.

The loop in one paragraph

The complete conveyor stack fits on one screen. Tap or click an orb, then choose a landing point above the conveyor one level higher. Repeat until the orb reaches the reactor portal. Deliveries recharge the reactor, missed orbs remove a large chunk of energy, and quick consecutive deliveries build a scoring streak.

Streaks are the score

Quick consecutive deliveries raise the streak and create the largest scoring opportunities. Orbs that are already spaced for clean lifts are valuable because they can reach the portal in a steady sequence.

A rescue can preserve that sequence, but attention is limited. When one difficult orb is falling while several others are lined up, chasing it may cost the larger streak. Read the whole stack and protect the delivery sequence with the best overall value.

Reactor energy sets the limit

Energy drains throughout the run. Each successful delivery charges the reactor, while each missed orb cuts away a large additional chunk. Repeated misses are therefore dangerous even during a strong scoring streak.

This creates a genuine tradeoff. Saving one orb protects a significant amount of energy. Accepting that loss can still be correct when the rescue would cause several lined-up orbs to fall or would break a much stronger delivery streak.

Prepare safe landing points

Read the next conveyor before every lift. Its direction, speed, and remaining space determine where an orb should land and how soon it will need another move. Reliable landing areas buy time for scanning the other belts.

Different conveyor layouts change those safe areas. Wide-open belts allow later decisions, while tighter layouts reward earlier lifts and more careful placement.

Rescue plays: worth it, conditionally

A missed orb has an immediate, substantial energy cost, so rescue it when the next move is clear. Before committing, check the other conveyors. A rescue that causes two or three prepared orbs to fall is a net loss.

Sometimes the strongest play is to absorb one energy hit and keep the larger sequence moving. This is especially true when several orbs are approaching the portal and can extend a valuable streak.

Power-ups are emergency tools

Upflux gives you six kinds of control: slow time, freeze the belts, reverse the flow, restore energy, clear the board, and briefly stop new orbs from spawning.

Every one of them is worth more during a surge than during a calm stretch, and by a wide margin. Freezing the belts when routing is comfortable converts a manageable situation into a slightly more comfortable one. Freezing the belts when the screen has just filled and a surge has hit converts a run-ending moment into a recoverable one.

The discipline is simple and hard: hold one in reserve. A power-up used during a calm sequence may be unavailable when a surge threatens the delivery chain.

Restore energy is worth using when the reactor is genuinely close to empty because it directly extends the run.

Pressure rises within consistent rules

Upflux escalates through more orbs, faster belts, and reactor surges while keeping the same controls. More orbs spawn, belts speed up, reactor surges push the pace. The same two-step lift becomes harder to manage as every belt fills, while the input stays consistent.

The core habits continue to apply throughout a run: protect valuable streaks, choose safe landing points, and keep a power-up ready for pressure spikes. Rising speed makes those decisions harder to execute.

Frequently asked questions

Is it better to deliver more orbs or to keep a streak alive?
Keep the streak. Chained deliveries are worth considerably more than the same orbs delivered separately, so a run that delivers fewer orbs cleanly usually outscores a run that delivers more with breaks in between.
What ends an Upflux run?
Reactor energy. It drains continuously, successful deliveries restore it, and every missed orb removes a large additional chunk. The run ends when the reactor reaches zero.
Should I use power-ups as soon as I get them?
No. Power-ups are worth far more during a surge, when the screen is full and routing is about to break down, than during a calm stretch where you did not need the help.
